XCR Codes are based on the CHEINISSE-REGENSTREIF
system (discussed in the ECCC No. 100, special issue, 1973) are made of 11 characters :
1st
group
:
2 digits,
corresponding to the rounded projectile diameter, in mm. For example, 07
corresponds to a diameter between 6,5 and 7,49 mm.
2nd
group
:
3 digits,
corresponding to the rounded case length, in mm.
3rd
group
:
3
letters, corresponding successively to the case shape, extraction mode,
and priming type.

used to differentiate calibers, which, while being different, would otherwise
have identical codes. The last character may also have a specific meaning : W
for Wildcat cartridges.
